Fought, but lost in Monaco
Olympiacos fought, but failed to win in Monaco. The team lost 85-77, for the 11th Euroleague round.
The 'red & whites' got to lead 10-7 at 4', but Monaco's pressing defense led them to turnovers and bad decision-making. The hosts took advantage of that, and they set the tempo, closing the first quarter at +5 (22-17), while they were leading by 9 at 15' (30-21). At that point though, Isaiah Canaan appeared to be on fire. The American guard was unstoppable and kept Olympiacos' 'alive' in the game almost by himeself (34-30).
Shaquielle McKissic got to step on the floor at 16', after a really long time (he had been injured during the game against Panathinaikos for the Euroleague premiere) and substantially helped the 'red & whites' counter attack, since with a two and an additional free throw by the American forward, out team closed the first half in the lead.
In the second half, the game became a derby. Alec Peters got the baton from Isaiah Canaan in terms of scoring (49-52 at 26'), but Monaco, through its solid defensive game and in combination with good long-range shooting, got ahead by 4p. (58-54 at 29'). Peters replied with 2 for 2 threes and once again gave the lead to our team (58-59) by the end of the third quarter.
The battle went on full force into the 4th quarter, with both teams tied 71-71 at 37'. At that point though, Olympiacos made some bad decisions in offense, missed free throws and allowed Monaco to run a partial 8-2 and practically determine the game (79-73, with 40'' on the clock).
Nigel Williams-Goss (injury) and the new signee, Filip Petrusev did not travel with the team (Naz Mitrou-Long is not eligible to play for the Euroleague before the end of the first round).
The quarters: 22-17, 38-39, 58-59, 85-77.
