A home win vs Panionios
Olympiacos, with Thomas Walkup and Evan Fournier returning to action, defeated Panionios 81 - 66 at the SEF for the 3rd round of the Basket League.
Just minutes before tip-off, the Presidents of our team, Panagiotis and Giorgos Angelopoulos, honored Sasha Vezenkov, Evan Fournier, and Nikola Milutinov, who were members of last season’s All Team Starting Five of the League! As for the game, our team started sluggishly and quickly found itself trailing (2 - 11, 4’). Alec Peters and Nikola Milutinov provided offensive solutions (11 - 17, 6’), but the visitors played with more energy and held onto the lead. With an 8 - 0 run, Olympiacos tied the game (19 - 19), with the first quarter ending 19 - 22.
In the second quarter, a three-pointer from Kostas Papanikolaou gave Olympiacos its first lead (25 - 24, 14’), but Panionios struck back from beyond the arc to regain the advantage (27 - 29). A steal by Ntilikina followed by an assist to Donta Hall for a powerful dunk was the highlight of the game (29 - 29), with the American center bringing both scoring and excitement in the paint. Ntilikina led the offense in the final minutes of the half, which ended with a three-pointer by Giannoulis Larentzakis for a 42 - 37 lead.
With tougher defense and an 11 - 3 partial run in the first five minutes of the third quarter, our team, which used extended rotations, built a double-digit lead (53 - 40) and took control of the game. Frank Ntilikina and Tyson Ward starred on both ends of the court, with the French guard throwing down a spectacular dunk after an Alec Peters assist in a play that thrilled the crowd. Giannoulis Larentzakis hit from deep to make it +15 (60 - 45), which was also the score at the end of the third quarter.
Olympiacos continued to dominate in the final period, with coach Giorgos Bartzokas able to distribute playing time. Giannoulis Larentzakis and Donta Hall added to the scoring (65 - 49, 33’), while Evan Fournier and Kostas Papanikolaou also contributed from beyond the arc (80–63), with the game ending 81–66.
