A great victory for Olympiacos in the beginning of 2012 in a packed Nea Smirni gym against Panionios 80-69, a victory that kept them at the top of the ranking.
Dusan Ivkovic’ team, that once again played without Spanoulis, Papadopoulos and Mantzaris, was very early in the game deprived of the services of Dimitris Katsivelis who got injured in his left knee.
Even though, the “reds” a way to … escape a “burning” home court. How so? Olympiacos defense has once again been impressive, Andreas Glyniadakis scored 19 points and most of them in decisive parts of the game and the couple of Sloukas – Lucas orchestrated the “reds” game in the right fashion.
The quarters: 17-23, 34-41,56-62, 69-80
Panionios (Mpartzokas): Xanthopoulos 8, Keys 12, Αthanassoulas 1, Stevenson 6, Dimpler 14, Jankovic14 , Kavvadas 2, Ιoannou, Sarikopoulos, Νatjfei 6, Paragios 2, Barlos 4.
Οlympiacos (Ivkovic): Hines 4, Lucas 9, Antic 1, Howard, Κeselj 7, Pelekanos 2, Gecevicius 19, Glyniadakis 17, Printezis 14, Papanikolaou 3, Sloukas 4, Κatsivelis.
DUSAN IVKOVIC: «It was a good game for Olympiacos. It was difficult to prepare because there was no game for us on December 28 and I gave my players four days off. I hadn’t known if we were going to find rhythm against a team that I like the way it plays. They control the tempo and create well. The kids are getting better. The first quarter was our best. But then we made some really unnecessary fouls in that period. Panionios scored some points from throws and we are to blame. We played as team in both offense and defense. I don’t like talking about individual players and say that Glyniadakis was the best or Antic was not. Our biggest problem has been too few assists.
We lost one more players tonight. We all talked with the President of the World Coaches Association and I said that we have to draw a line as to protect the players. I’m sure Natzjfei’s foul was not intentional, but there are games where fouls like that are. Unfortunately, now we have one more injury to deal with. We need to be careful.
There are no players available. Do you know any to tell me? I will sign him immediately, if there is one. I ask you to help. I can suggest tonight that we take him and we are going to sign him. It’s only your job to write about players… And now Glyniadakis will be asking for a new contract (laughs) ».
ΑNDREAS GLYNIADAKIS: «Panionios is very strong when playing at home and our basic goal has been to play a set game, but also control creativity by Xanthopoulos and Keys. I think that by playing zone defense, we managed to get an important victory. We want to improve as much as possible until the beginning of the TOP-16».
