A home loss to Baskonia
Olympiacos lost to Baskonia at the SEF 74-75 for the 7th round of the Euroleague.
With impressive percentages from the three-point line and Alec Peters taking center stage, the ‘red & whites’ built a +11 lead (20-9) at 7’. However, they appeared to be switching off rather abruptly. They collapsed on both ends of the floor, received a partial 12-41, and watched Baskonia taking an 18p. lead (32-50) at 29. Finally, after 4:19’’ when they remained scoreless, Kostas Papanikolaou succeeded with a three-point attempt, writing the 35-50 that marked the end of the first half.
In the second half, Isaiah Canaan was on fire, our team’s defensive performance significantly improved, rebounding balanced out and the difference was down to 7p. (60-67) at 30’. Running a partial 6-0, Olympiacos closed into one point (66-67), the Basques ‘breathed’ with a +5 (66-71), but with two back-to-back threes by Giannoulis Larentzakis and Alec Peters, the ‘red & whites’ once again got to lead (72-71) at 38’.
Our team could have furthered the distance, but turnovers and bad decision-making did not allow it. Moneke gave the lead back to Baskonia (72-73), Canaan was blocked by Costello, however, following a missed three by the latter, Olympiacos was able to get ahead once again by 1 (74-73) with two free throws by Larentzakis and 10.6’ on the clock. McIntyre made the winning shot under pressure 0.7’ before the clock expired.
Giorgos Bartzokas called a time-out, but when putting the ball back into the court, although Fall was able to get it -and who had already played 37’ minutes – failed to tip it in.
- Nikola Milutinov played only 3 minutes due to his injury, while Luke Sikma and Shaquielle McKissic were out for one more game.
