Bartzokas and Ward talk about the game against Real M.

After Olympiacos’ victorious Euroleague opener against Baskonia, head coach Giorgos Bartzokas discussed the key takeaways and the areas needing improvement ahead of the upcoming clash with Real Madrid (October 2, 20:45 CET).
“We can’t only focus on the things that suit us. The process of improving a team involves practices, games, video analysis; and often, even defeats. The season opener was important for us. We executed well, scoring over 100 points despite shooting only 20% from three, many of which were wide-open looks from very good shooters. The fact that we grabbed 27 offensive rebounds, a point of emphasis for us this year, was crucial to the win. Despite the game’s fast pace, we showed patience on offense and found the right options.
On the other hand, we didn’t defend well in transition. We needed to be quicker and more decisive, especially in how we managed fouls. These issues were addressed in today’s video session, and our goal is to improve on the weak points and remain consistent in the areas we performed well.”
On the upcoming game against Real Madrid, Bartzokas noted: “Every result affects the next one, either positively or negatively. We know what we’re capable of, but we also know who Real Madrid are. They’re an experienced, highly talented team now building a new identity after Coach Mateo’s departure. It may take them a bit of time to reach their desired level, but they remain extremely high-quality and know how to win.
We’re expecting a very demanding game, and we’ll need to be fully focused to fight for the win.”
On the possibility of Frank Ntilikina playing: “We follow certain principles as a team. The way we play requires a foundation built through training. Frank has shown great understanding of what we want to do. However, the priority is for him to first get into the team’s rhythm; he’ll play on Sunday with Maroussi, and then again against Dubai.”
On Tyler Dorsey: “I said before the season started that we shouldn’t underestimate the players already on the roster. I told you that Tyler is different this year. He’s healthy, ended last season well, performed excellently with the national team, and is working non-stop. He even did extra training on Sunday, right after we returned late from Rhodes - where he had just been named MVP of the tournament - and despite having the day off, he went to shoot.
That shows his motivation to perform well this season, and I can only praise that.
I also want to mention Walkup. Last year, even while playing, he was only able to do about 50% of training sessions. Olympiacos can count on these players; they’re already here and we consider them extremely important.”
From his side, Tyson Ward, who made his EuroLeague debut with Olympiacos, said: “A win is always a win. It’s definitely a great way to start the season. There are things we can improve moving forward, but at this level, you need to take whatever you can.”
When asked about the pressure of his debut appearance this season: “Yes, I was a bit nervous before the start. But once I hit my first shot, everything else came naturally. From that point on, I just felt the game and tried to keep improving with each minute.”
On his performance and contribution: “I tried to stick to my fundamentals and start from defense; that’s my foundation. I’m still learning and adapting, but when I play with purpose and focus, I feel I perform better. If I stay committed to that, the rest will come.”
