Giorgos Angelopoulos: «Our fans' love gives strength and motivation to keep going»
Giorgos Angelopoulos was present at the triumphant welcome of the Olympiacos delegation following the win at OAKA for the 19th roundof the EuroLeague. After congratulating each of the players and the team’s coaching staff individually, he made the following statements.
In his opening remarks regarding Olympiacos’ victory over their eternal rivals, President Giorgos Angelopoulos said: “Happy New Year to everyone. We are very happy that the year started this way, with a very big win against Panathinaikos, who are a major rival. It is the 10th consecutive EuroLeague win against Panathinaikos, which is extremely important, but the season is still at its midpoint, so we continue pursuing the goals we have set in order to achieve them all.”
On the significance of the 10th consecutive victory over Panathinaikos, he added: “It says a lot, without doubt. Winning against Panathinaikos 10 times. This Panathinaikos, with this budget, this arena, with their problems resolved. Beating them in this way, consecutively, over so many games is obviously important. From that point on, however, Olympiacos’ goal is not to beat Panathinaikos 10–0, or whatever the count may be, but to reach the top.”
The President was then asked about the SEF arena, as well as the rumored interest in signing a big man, and he emphasized: “I don’t think now is the right time, but regarding the Peace & Friendship Stadium, everything is moving forward normally so that something spectacular can be created. I believe we will have good developments.
I don’t have anything to tell you (regarding a transfer). What Olympiacos fans should know is that we are doing everything we can to make the team the best it can possibly be. From there on, we will see how everything unfolds.”
He then responded to a question about the love shown by the fans: “It’s good to experience this. The love of the fans gives us strength and motivation to continue, because at this moment Olympiacos does not have an arena. For so many years we have been putting our own money in, and for the arena we will put in a lot of money as well, because some people are confused. It’s good for them to understand this and clear up any misunderstandings. Since it’s New Year’s time, Happy New Year. The love of the fans gives us strength. We love them and they love us. You can see the relationship that exists; I don’t think many statements are needed.”
Finally, the President was asked to send his wishes for 2026, and he said: “All the best. Let’s get where we truly belong.”
