«You have to prove worthy of moving to the next level»
Basketball in Indiana is a … religion and for the small city Matt Howard grew up in, basketball has always been first priority. The new Olympiacos transfer, member of a family with 10 kids, spoke to olympiacosbc.gr for his decision to live his dream away from home…
“It has been a big decision for me, but coming to a team that carries the Olympiacos tradition is much easier. I have known Olympiacos due to former players of its roster, like Josh Childress and Raso Nesterovic. I know they are one of the great European teams and I know that they always aim high”, the 22 year old American forward commented from across the Atlantic.
Is the “reds” tradition cause for more anxiety? “When you move to the next level, you have to prove worthy. I’m coming to help and learn. Learn from my team mates and the coach for whom I have heard is a legend. I was told he’s respected by everyone and I have a lot to learn from him”.
What should the Olympiacos fans expect from Matt? “I play hard; I play more of the European style of basketball. I can play the post, but I can also play the pick n’ roll, play defense and grab some rebounds. I’ll do anything they ask from me and everything I have to”.
Matt Howard was twice only a breath away from winning a major title. He made the NCAA Finals twice with Butler and that has been a major accomplishment, but for him…”We came very close to the title the last couple of years, but we didn’t win it and that’s what counts in the end. I want to win and I think I have left unfinished business. The title I didn’t win with the NCAA I want to win with Olympiacos”.
