Novo Nordisk Hellas (NNH), Olympiacos BC and the Piraeus Mayor Panagiotis Fassoulas, honored the distinguished doctor, veteran basketball player and current Mayor of Hemettous, Mr. Christos Zoupas.

By means of the “We change diabetes” campaign of Novo Nordisk Hellas in collaboration with Olympiacos BC, a special event was held with the award of an honorary plate to the veteran basketball player, diabetes specialist doctor and current Hemettous Mayor Mr. Christos Zoupas, for his invaluable offer to sports and the medical area of diabetes research. The award was presented by Panagiotis Giannakis together with Giannis Bourousis and Jotam Halpern, while the esteemed scientist was then honored by the Piraeus Mayor Panagiotis Fassoulas.

After receiving his award, Mr. Zoupas commented quite emotionally: “I’m very touched and especially happy for given the chance today to relive my childhood years, come back to the same places where I spent 20 years of my life. In my face, a whole generation that grew up, matured and shined in an area called Greek Basketball was honored. That’s why I want to thank Novo Nordisk that thought and contributed to the organization of this event. I also want to thank Panagiotis Giannakis for remembering that there had been people before them that built what it is today. Because if you don’t remember the past and you don’t manage the present you cannot invest in the future. And finally I want to thank Panagiotis Fassoulas and the Piraeus Municipality for giving me the chance to be honored and put in the same line as a co-Mayor of a much smaller municipality (Hemettous) in this place, the Peace and Friendship Stadium. Sports unite and they should never divide people. Sports is quality of life and above all it’s a means to express yourself”

Christos Zoupas the doctor sent his own message on diabetes: “On the other hand you should all remember that diabetes in nowadays is not a disease but a way of life, a way that should be taught and learned and one should get accustomed at living with it for many years”.

The Piraeus Mayor Mr. Panagiotis Fassoulas said in turn: “The doctor Christos Zoupas had been a member of a team that put basketball on high standards in Greece and also happens to be a Mayor. It’s very important for us to honor people that offer to our society and it’s a great honor for me too. The message is timeless and always the same. Young kids should be involved with sports and basketball. I suggest parents urge their kids to get involved with basketball and sports in general because this makes happy kids”.

The former “red and white” center also made a comment on the team: “This year is Olympiacos year. The Final Four is a tournament and no one can predict anything. Olympiacos has to break the tradition set by Panathinaikos and win the Championship. Of course, eating makes you hungrier and it would be good to also win the European championship. It seems that Olympiacos has a solid team and one understands where the other stands at any moment”.
