Zenit St. Petersburg: The 'Cinderella'

Zenit St. Petersburg is making its Euroleague debut this season thanks to the wild card offered by the organizers.
Last season they made the Eurocup TOP-16, while the advanced up to the semis of the Russian League (eliminated Lokomotiv Kuban at the quarter finals, but was swept during the semis by CSKA). Veteran coach Juan Plaza is in its bench, who has a lot of success in his CV… He won the Eurocup in 2007 with Real Madrid and once again in 2017 with Unicaja, has won the Spanish League title in the 2006-07 season with Real and has been the Lithuanian Champion with Zalgiris Kaunas in the 2012-13 season.

Twice a European Champion (2015, 2018), winner of the Intercontinental Cup (2015) and the Spanish Super Cup (2018), four times ACB Champion (2014-15, 2015-16, 2017-18, 2018-19) and three times winner of the Copa del Rey (2015, 2016, 2017)! All of them wearing Real's jersey! The season hasn't started well for him. During the premiere game against Alba Berlin, he suffered a broken nose, hence missing the 2nd game of the competition against Barcelona. However, he's expected to play against Olympiacos wearing a special face mask.
Do you know that…
- Zenit has yet to win a Euroleague game. They have lost on the road to Alba Berlin (85-65) and at home to Barcelona (63-87).
- They succeeded in 'shocking' the European Champion in her house for the Russian League. They beat CSKA 79-82, however, lost at home to Nizhny 69-76 in the following game.
- It's the first time ever Olympiacos and Zenit are facing off.
- The coach of Olympiacos, Kestutis Kemzura, has worked with Anton Ponkrashov in Khimki (during the 2006-07 and 2007-08 seasons) and with Andrey Zubkov in Lokomotiv Kuban (2008-09 and 2010-11).
