Ward on Barcelona: «Defense is first, offense will follow»
Olympiacos hosts Barcelona at the Peace and Friendship Stadium for Round 25 of the EuroLeague, and Tyson Ward, just a few days after recording a historic triple-double against Kolossos, spoke to olympiacosbc.gr ahead of the matchup.
The American forward talked about the upcoming game as well as his performance in Rhodes, while also sending his own message to the PAOK fans who tragically lost their lives in the accident that shocked Greece.
The coach said in his statements that against Barca we played our worst game of the season. What does Olympiacos need to change in order to win this time?
“Everything. They beat us last time, and we need to pay that back. It’s very important to fight in front of our fans, and that’s exactly what we’re going to do.”
So, has it become somewhat personal for you?
“Yes, every game is personal and we have to approach it that way. First of all, we need to give everything on defense, and the offense will follow.”
Had you ever recorded a triple-double before in your career?
“No, never; it was my first one! It’s very difficult to achieve and I have endless respect for anyone who does it. I didn’t even realize I had done it until the game was over. Of course, it’s uplifting for me, and personal success is always nice, but team success lasts forever.”
After the game, people were wondering whether the team has found a new point guard.
“Whenever they call my number for that position, I’ll be ready (laughs).”
What were your thoughts when you heard about the tragic accident in Romania involving PAOK fans?
“I saw it and it’s always sad when such terrible things happen to fans. It doesn’t only affect the team, but the entire community around it. All I can do is wish safety to everyone who travels to support their team in the future and express my condolences. We are with you, guys, and we send our love to you and your families.”
What message would you like to send to the fans who will fill the SEF tomorrow?
“We can’t wait to see you! It’s always great to play in a packed arena, and we’re happy to be back on our home court.”
